These days we do all our pressure cooking using our Instant Pot. Here you can find out, why we replaced conventional pressure cooker with Instant Pot.
Conventional pressure cooker
Our good old conventional pressure cooker has been with us for a long time. We have been enjoying several recipes cooked with this pressure cooker. Since this is a pressure cooker, it allows us to cook food faster. This not only saves time, it also saves us on bills to the energy company. The basic premise of a pressure cooker is simple. The pressure cooker allows us to raise the pressure inside the cooker. At a higher pressure, the boiling point of water increase. This allows water to absorb more heat and food cooks faster. See the wikipedia for pressure cooking for interesting history on this invention.
What’s an Instant Pot?
Instant Pot is the next evolution of a conventional pressure cooker. It has all the same benefits of pressure cooking. It is an electric pressure cooker, which has several built in cooking setting. These built in functions are at a high level very similar to the ones in a microwave. Just like with a microwave one can change the power and time, in many Instant Pot models one can select the high pressure or low pressure and also the cooking time. Note that two pressure modes are available in “DUO” model. Also many Instant Pot models have specific settings like “Rice”, “Poultry” similar to specific setting in a microwave like “Popcorn”, “Frozen Pizza” etc.
What was included in our Instant Pot ?
Our Instant Pot consists of the main base unit, a inner steel pot, lid, steamer base, few utensils, user manual and a recipe book. See the photo which shows everything except the books.
Why Instant Pot is better than conventional pressure cooker ?
After cooking several recipes with Instant Pot, we realize that Instant Pot is simply awesome!
It requires much less attention. For example to cook rice, one needs to just add rice, water and start the cooking program. In contrary to one needs to manage the cooking with a conventional pressure cooker. This means we can devote this extra time to relax or take care of other things.
Since very little water escapes the Instant Pot, most of the flavor remains inside the food. After cooking several recipes, we like the flavors very much.
Another advantage is that recipes become easier to replicate. Lets say you figure how to prepare a yummy recipe. If we note down the exact setting used in an Instant Pot, the recipe becomes repeatable. Similarly, it is easier to replicate someone’s Instant Pot recipe, for example recipe found on various websites.
Our Instant Pot has the option to prepare Yogurt. Note that not all models have this feature.
We find that the Instant Pot is a bit easier to clean. On the other hand, it can take some work to clean the outside of a conventional pressure cooker. With the Instant Pot, it’s much easier to clean. Note that, the inner pot is dish washer safe. The rest of the Instant Pot is easily cleanable by wiping with a damp cloth/paper.
The Instant Pot has many safety features built in. Our Instant Pot has a safety lid lock which prevents accidental opening when there is pressure inside the cooker. Also a pressure regulator is built in along with detection of leaky lid. It has an anti block vent and a magnetic sensor for lid position detection. The unit includes an automatic temperature controller and a high temperature monitor. It’s fuse cuts off power in case of electric current or temperature exceeds a safe limit. It has an automatic pressure controller and excess pressure release mechanism.
So, that’s why replaced our conventional pressure cooker with Instant Pot.
